Experimentation

In this tutorial, my tutor really pushed the idea of creating even more experimentation within my work. The whole tutorial group agreed how they believe they want me to be even more playful in my sampling. My sketchbook drawings really reflect a playful and energetic feeling, that could inspire really interesting samples.

In order to achieve this, the group suggested being even more experimental with my choice of materials. My laser cut fabric pieces are interesting, and I am happy with their outcome. However, I should start using a wider variety of non-fabric materials and explore more tactile, 3D sampling.

My tutor suggested the possibility of using metal sheets, such as aluminium sheeting. I find this idea intriguing, and will aim to research and test out this material in the upcoming week.

We also carried on discussing the context of my work. I stated how it has become important to me to have that sense of interactivity within my work, and how I am interesting on focusing on interactive textiles for children to explore.

My tutor contemplated how my photography of my laser cut pieces look quite sculptural. This lead to a suggestion of artists and designers, who create sculptural work, that could inspire my sampling and context. This included Claire Norcross, Cornelia Parker and Richard Serra. Someone in my group also suggested a sculpture of a beehive in New York to suggest.

This will lead my visual and material research for the upcoming week. It will allow me to really start an awareness for the message I am portraying in my work, and allow further experimentation.
