Tutorial Reflection- A New Way Of Thinking
Before Easter holidays, I had a tutorial with Kate and my peers before the Easter holiday. This session
was very important as the feedback and ideas from this tutorial will guide my developmental sampling
and sketchbook work over this time.

I was apprehensive before this tutorial due to my focus the last two weeks being on completing my CP
essay. However, I was put at ease as Kate reassured that this was the case throughout the design
department, and that I had exciting work forming, and many interesting ideas. Though I had many
ideas, this had also started to become an issue. With so many ideas taking my project in different
directions, Kate made me realise that within the time given for the project, it would be impossible for
me to explore them all.

ideas, this had also started to become an issue. With so many ideas taking my project in different
directions, Kate made me realise that within the time given for the project, it would be impossible for
me to explore them all.
To help this issue, Kate suggested a ‘Divergent and Convergent way of thinking’. Divergent thinking
means letting ideas flow from one another, in a web like way. This allows exploration of favourite ideas,
and finding out how successful these are. Convergent thinking is a good way to move on from this
way of thinking, as it narrows down multiple ideas and finds single solutions/focuses in analytical
ways. These ways of thinking combine extremely well as a way to develop ideas in a creative but
purposeful way. Right now I am focusing almost solely on the Divergent approach. However, I now
need to start analysing my ideas, and focusing on ones that will achieve the outcomes I aim to explore.

Kate also reminded me that my sketchbook is a good place to document different ideas, as these can
be explored in future projects. This will also allow me to explore each idea thoroughly, and allow the
explorations to be more successful. This introduction to a new way of thinking eased my crowded
mind. I also think jotting my ideas down in my sketchbook will really help me document and analyse
ideas, and will start using this approach.
