Embroidery artist Junko Oki has an extremely unique way of drawing inspiration, whilst creating her pieces of embroidery work. She states that she creates work ‘spontaneously’ whist keeping in mind a ‘driving force’ such as a theme of Love and Death. As if detaching herself from anything but that thought, her stitches start being made onto fabric. She has in a sense lost control of her own work, as her feelings and emotions instead take charge. She is simply an ‘Observer to the magic of her own needle’.

This poetic way of describing her work makes me contemplate a new way of approaching my work. My aim within this project is to explore how playing games can evoke different levels of sound and emotion, and then explore how these games can be captured in a unique visual way

Therefore, like Oki I want to allow most ideas within my work to be driven by my recordings of a mixture of indoor and outdoor games. Almost like an act of meditation, I want to be fully absorbed and focused on listening to recordings of indoor and outdoor games, and whilst doing this, allow those sounds to control my actions subconsciously. As well as allowing my work to carry on the abstract way of drawing that I have started to employ, inspired by a Friday drawing session, this mind set will allow me to create work I believe truly symbolises each game that is being played accurately.
